Syntax & Misc.

Verse 6

  • Clause Structure 1 (וַֽיְהִי־לִי֙ שׁ֣וֹר וַחֲמ֔וֹר צֹ֖אן וְעֶ֣בֶד וְשִׁפְחָ֑ה): V-M-S
    • Each member of the compound subject is a collective plural (W-O 7.2.1d; J-M 135c).
    • Even though the subject includes a multiplicity, the verb is declined as a singular (GKC 145a & o).
  • Clause Structure 2 (וָֽאֶשְׁלְחָה֙ לְהַגִּ֣יד לַֽאדֹנִ֔י לִמְצֹא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ): V-O
  • Infinitive Structure A (לְהַגִּ֣יד לַֽאדֹנִ֔י): V-M
  • Infinitive Structure B (לִמְצֹא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ): V-O-M

Verse 7

  • Embedded Structure A (בָּ֤אנוּ אֶל־אָחִ֨יךָ֙ אֶל־עֵשָׂ֔ו): V-M
  • Embedded Structure B (וְגַם֙ הֹלֵ֣ךְ לִקְרָֽאתְךָ֔): V-M
    • In such a clause in which the participle functions as a finite verb, an independent personal pronoun is expected, but as here sometime omitted (GKC 116s; J-M 154c).
  • Embedded Structure C (וְאַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת אִ֖ישׁ עִמּוֹֽ): S-P

Verse 8

  • Clause Structure 1 (וַיִּירָ֧א יַעֲקֹ֛ב מְאֹ֖ד): V-S-M
  • Clause Structure 2 (וַיֵּ֣צֶר לוֹ֑): V-M
    • An impersonal construction is used here to express despair (J-M 152d).
  • Clause Structure 3 (וַיַּ֜חַץ אֶת־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹ֗ וְאֶת־הַצֹּ֧אן וְאֶת־הַבָּקָ֛ר וְהַגְּמַלִּ֖ים לִשְׁנֵ֥י מַחֲנֽוֹת): V-O-M
    • The relative clause includes only the prepositional phrase, אתּו "with him."
    • The final constituent in the compound object phrase, הגמלים, is not preceded by the definite direct object marker.

Verse 9

  • Clause Structure 1 (וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אִם־יָב֥וֹא עֵשָׂ֛ו אֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הָאַחַ֖ת וְהִכָּ֑הוּ וְהָיָ֛ה הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הַנִּשְׁאָ֖ר לִפְלֵיטָֽה): V-O
  • Embedded Structure A (אִם־יָב֥וֹא עֵשָׂ֛ו אֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הָאַחַ֖ת): V-S-M
    • This clause begins a compound protasis of a conditional sentence which is completed with clause C (GKC 112p).
    • The noun, "camp," is modified with the numeral as an adjective (agreeing in gender, number, and definiteness).
  • Embedded Structure B (וְהִכָּ֑הוּ): V-O
    • The waw-consecutive perfect continues the aspect of the previous prefix verb (W-O 32.2.1d)
  • Embedded Structure C (וְהָיָ֛ה הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הַנִּשְׁאָ֖ר לִפְלֵיטָֽה): V-S-M
