Vocabulary

            כנען name: “Canaan”

            בתואל name: “Bethuel”

            לבן name: “Laban”

Syntax & Misc.

Verses 1-2

  • Clause Typology 1 (וַיִּקְרָ֥א יִצְחָ֛ק אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֖ב֑): V-S-M
  • Clause Typology 2 (וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ אֹתוֹ): V-O
  • Clause Typology 3 (וַיְצַוֵּ֨הוּ֙): V-O
    • The verb form is a Piel waw-consecutive imperfect from the final weak verb with a 3ms objective suffix attached.
  • Clause Typology 4 (וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לוֹ֔ לֹֽא־תִקַּ֥ח אִשָּׁ֖ה מִבְּנ֥וֹת כְּנָֽעַן): V-M-O
  • Embedded Typology A (לֹֽא־תִקַּ֥ח אִשָּׁ֖ה מִבְּנ֥וֹת כְּנָֽעַן): V-O-M
    • A negative command is couched as a negative particle plus the prefixed verbal form (i.e. the imperfect or jussive); never is the imperative used with a negative.
  • Embedded Typology B (ק֥וּם לֵךְ֙ פַּדֶּ֣נָֽה אֲרָ֔ם בֵּ֥יתָה בְתוּאֵ֖ל אֲבִ֣י אִמֶּ֑ךָ): V-M
    • The preposition, לך, in this and the following clause is functioning as an ethical dative.
    • The construct phrase, בְּפַדַּן אֲרָם, is used elsewhere with the preposition; the absolute form is found once (פַדָּן Genesis 48:7).  The form with the suffixed he is only found in this chapter (vss. 2, 5, 6, 7).  Some suggest the suffix is the locative (cf. HALOT, 913); the suffix is also attached to the nomen regens of the following construct phrase, ביתה בתואל.  GKC discuss two other issues of phonology (16c, 90i; also see J-M 93c).
  • Embedded Typology C (וְקַח־לְךָ֤ מִשָּׁם֙ אִשָּׁ֔ה מִבְּנ֥וֹת לָבָ֖ן אֲחִ֥י אִמֶּֽךָ): V-M-O-M
    • The construct noun, בנות, is not the plural of בית “house” (which is the suppletive form בָּתֵּי) but the plural of בַּת “daughter”.
    • אֲחִי is the singular construct form not to be confused with אָחִי the 1cs pronominal form.
