Syntax & Misc.

Verse 41

  • Clause Typology 1 (וַיִּשְׂטֹ֤ם עֵשָׂו֙ אֶֽת־יַעֲקֹ֔ב עַל־הַ֨בְּרָכָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בֵּרֲכֹ֖ו אָבִ֑יו): V-S-O-M
  • Embedded Typology A (בֵּרֲכֹ֖ו אָבִ֑יו): V-O-S
  • Clause Typology 2 (וַיֹּ֨אמֶר עֵשָׂ֜ו בְּלִבֹּ֗ו יִקְרְבוּ֙ יְמֵי֙ אֵ֣בֶל אָבִ֔י וְאַֽהַרְגָ֖ה אֶת־יַעֲקֹ֥ב אָחִֽי): V-S-M-O
    • The reflexive idiom בלבו is similar to the English calque—he said in his heart (meaning to himself).
  • Embedded Typology A (יִקְרְבוּ֙ יְמֵי֙ אֵ֣בֶל אָבִ֔י): V-S
    • The three member construct phrase, ימי אבל אבי, functions as the subject of the clause.

  • Clause Typology 3 (וַתִּקְרָ֤א לְיַעֲקֹב֙ בְּנָ֣הּ הַקָּטָ֔ן): V-M

  • Embedded Typology A (הִנֵּה֙ עֵשָׂ֣ו אָחִ֔יךָ מִתְנַחֵ֥ם לְךָ֖ לְהָרְגֶֽךָ): S-V-M
    • On the pragmatics of הנה see GKC 116n)
